Adira

Quarter Horse Mix | Bay Mare, Approx 15 yr, 15h

Adira is the matriarch of our biggest rescue to date – the Hartsel Herd. When she came to us in October 2021, we rescued her 2 daughters and granddaughter as well. Shortly after we found out that all 3 were bred. We learned that she has given birth to at least 7 foals in her young life and has always been watching over her family. Near the end of her pregnancy, she endured some complications but pulled through and then sadly we lost her foal days after it was born. Adira was finally able to just be a horse. She has quickly shown us how willing she is to do everything she can to stay at the Rescue. From camp programming to pony rides, nothing really phases this sweet mare although she does share her thoughts from time to time. Her preference is to ride outside on the trail as opposed to an arena, but when bonded with a person we think she will surprise us all with what she’s willing to do. We are continuing her training as she helps with our educational programs.

Windy Calloway

Arabian/Saddlebred Mix | Black, 12yr, 15h

This gorgeous gelding is an absolute love and so eager to please. It was the desire of his aging former owner that he find his forever home where he will be doted on as he deserves. Calloway had a leg injury in his past when he was under one, which might limit his riding abilities if there is a desire to put him under saddle, but he has not shown any lameness nor has it hindered his day to day life whatsoever. He’s an easy keeper, loves to be groomed and a gentleman for the farrier.

Rainier (Registered Name: Tally Stick)

Off-Track Thoroughbred | Bay Gelding, 14yr, 16h

This stunning OTTB was surrendered to the rescue at the end of 2022 after sustaining a severe hoof injury his owner could not care for. Known as Tally Stick in his racing career, you can look him up for some of his 1st place winnings. After racing in England, Canada and then landing here in Colorado, he was retired by his last owner until unfortunately that owner passed away and Rainier and his companions ended up at an auction. Shortly after being with us, we realized how seriously damaged his hoof was as 1⁄3 of it literally fell apart. It has been a long road to recovery for Rainier as we have done everything we possibly can to help him on his healing journey. Rainier has exceeded all of our expectations with his resilience and perseverance and is now getting a refresher course on some light riding and more.

He enjoys being patiently brushed and is always eager for human attention and interaction. Rainier is ready for an experienced person that wants to occasionally do some light riding and can care for him throughout his next chapter in life.

Whiskey (AKA Xtra-Whiskey)

Paint Gelding, Late Teens, 16h

Whiskey is a paint gelding who knows he’s big and beautiful! This gentlemen has been retired from riding but still enjoys being lightly worked with on the ground for walks, liberty and more. He enjoys the attention, being groomed and massage and stretching work as he has developed some arthritis in his neck. He’s a little bit of an amicable trickster, providing entertainment to his equine and human friends alike. Whiskey is currently being fostered as a sanctuary equine at the Bristlecone View Ranch in Fairplay with our other companion available equine Zara.

Zara

Morgan | Bay Mare, 25yr, 15.2h

Zara is a special mare with a big personality. She led an extensive career in the show ring in her earlier years and was even named Morgan of the Year. Retired now with the Rescue for several years, she is enjoying a slower paced life, though she still enjoys her celebrity status. Unfortunately, as a result of being worked so hard in her younger years, she has developed a sway back which thankfully doesn’t seem to bother her one bit. She loves being groomed and pampered and would love someone to take her for walks and cultivate a connection with her. Zara’s ideal placement would be as a companion horse.

COSMO STAR

BLM MUSTANG | Grey Mare, 8yr, 14.5h

Cosmo was rounded up in 2017 as a young colt and came to the Rescue when she was approximately 9 months old. Cosmo has a quiet strength and a gentle spirit and is quick to get along with others – humans and equines alike. She has an incredible foundation of groundwork and loves to do things at liberty. Cosmo has been started under saddle and is progressing nicely in her training. She is walk/trot under saddle in the arena and has done some light trail work.

She’s intelligent, willing, and responsive, but needs an experienced rider that can help her work through some spooking and confidence building. She does best with calm, consistent handling and forms a deep bond with her person. This special mare is ready for her next chapter and would thrive in a home where she can continue her journey as a riding partner, trail companion, or even a liberty horse.
